YouTube has announced that they have changed their requirements for monetization.
The new requirements are that 500 subscribers, three public uploads in the last 90 days, and either 3,000 watch hours, three million YouTube short views, or a combination of both is needed for monetization. This change was made to make it easier for smaller channels to monetize. However, this does not mean that all monetization is being unlocked. Only some monetization is being allowed at this point. Super chats, channel memberships, super thanks, super stickers, and the ability to promote your own products with YouTube shopping are the current options for monetization. Ad revenue sharing is still not being unlocked until channels reach the previous requirements. This change is only rolling out to limited countries in the world.
Some advantages that smaller starting-off YouTube channels have are small channel appeal and the ability to create a tribe of early supporters. Small channel appeal can be beneficial for channels to gain super fans and people who personally know and like their content. This appeal can help create a tribe of early supporters who will engage with your content and help your channel monetize earlier. Promoting your own merchandise or products is also now much easier. However, these changes do not mean that all channels will benefit. Content that does not have a strong focus on audience interaction or creating a tribe may not benefit from these changes. Some caution with YouTube memberships is recommended. It may be worth waiting until there is a critical mass of subscribers before launching them.
